NEW DOCUMENTARY CELEBRATES PARK HISTORY
Showing May 30 at 3:00 pm and June 13 at 3:00pm

The famous Big Tree Grove at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park is highlighted in “When Redwoods Had Names” a new local documentary by Randall Brown. During its years as a resort in the 19th and early 20th centuries, several dozen old-growth redwoods had names. Vintage photographs, postcards, and film clips, set to music, are presented in this 21 minute film.
Brown tells of pioneers like John C. Fremont and Isaac Graham and stopovers by president Benjamin Harrison and Teddy Roosevelt along Roosevelt’s 1903 speech on behalf of the trees, the successful effort of the Welch family to protect the Big Trees, and how the grove became part of today’s State park.
It is currently available on DVD at the Mountain Parks Store at Henry Cowell Park.
